A search is underway for Regina Smith at Noccalula Falls in Gadsden. The 51-year-old woman was reported missing around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday after family members lost sight of her while she was on a flotation device at the bottom of the gorge. After an initial search by family members, they called 911 for assistance.
First responders began their search in the Black Creek gorge below the falls on Sunday night, but thunderstorms forced them to pause. The search resumed on Monday morning (May 26). According to WBRC, Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford stated that they are doing everything possible to locate the missing woman. "Gadsden Fire and Gadsden Police have called in extra duty. We’re all searching. We have partners on board with the Town of Centre and Guntersville. We also have the state helicopter coming, we have drones flying, we have all sorts of infrared technology we’re using to try to locate this individual." said Mayor Craig Ford.
Despite the ongoing search efforts, Noccalula Falls Park, the falls, and the campground remain open. However, visitors are advised to avoid the gorge trail and surrounding areas. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
