President Trump Pardons Susan B. Anthony For Voting Illegally As A Woman

Susan B. Anthony

President Donald Trump announced that he is posthumously pardoning Susan B. Anthony for illegally voting as a woman in 1872. He made the announcement on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

"She was never pardoned. Did you know that? She was never pardoned," Trump said at the White House. "What took so long?"

Anthony was convicted for illegally voting in the November 1872 presidential election and was fined $100. She vowed she would "never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty," and authorities never pursued her for the money.

After the highly publicized trial, Anthony continued her work as a significant figure in the women's suffrage movement. She helped author the bill that would become the 19th Amendment. It was first introduced in the Senate in 1878 and eventually ratified in 1920, 14 years after her death in 1906.
